Accident

The start of my 08 has been pretty surprising. Just before New Year's, I was driving from Eugene to Bend to spend the holiday w/ my friend & our families and someone in the opposite lane slid on ice & hit me head-on. I was pretty lucky considering that Richard's truck was completely destroyed (they had to use the "jaws of life" to get me out). And no one else was hurt but me. Mostly I just have a broken arm (compound fracture below the elbow), but also had to get some staples in my head & braces on my bottom teeth (for a month) to correct my bite that somehow got messed up.

While initially recovering, we stayed w/ my parents in Bend and despite the circumstance, it was really nice to spend more time with them.

I'm feeling much better, getting energy back & not needing the meds as much, though I do still get tired throughout the day.

Staples are still in because my head feels really tender still. On Monday I went to the orthopedic to get my cast; he said they could remove them. I can't wait cause my splint feels like it weighs about 15 lbs. Mostly my neck just aches when I have my arm in the sling for too long. I'll prob have the cast for 1-2 months.

And now I have braces on my bottom teeth, though hopefully that will only be for a month. My teeth had popped out at an angle so that I couldn't chew because my front teeth would hit them. Braces are working but now my front teeth are hitting the braces... guess it's still soup for me.

Mainly I've just been sleeping, reading, watching movies, chilling w/ the fam & friends... I don't really know how it's going to be returning to work since I won't be out of the cast for a month so I can only type one-handed & my job is pretty much just email :(
I also was supposed to go to a work event in CANCUN (!!) this month & now can't go because of my arm -- what are the odds.

In other news, I've been mentoring this boy for about 1.5 years & in Nov I won a mentoring award through the Dept of Health & Human Services & they flew me, him, & his mom to DC to get the award, which was quite an experience. Anyhow they just asked me to fly back to DC w/ him next week for a mentoring round-table discussion at the White House, how crazy huh? So I'm making travel arrangements & that'll be interesting.

I don't get it; it seems like the best & worst things can happen to me back-to-back; I'd like to believe that it happened for a reason and wasn't just a freak accident... But an event like this really just made me stop & appreciate all the love I have in my life & the beautiful friends I know. Thank you for your friendship, support, and well wishes!
