If you dream it, or at least wake up in the middle of the night with a slight memory of your childhood dog Bonnie's dog pen, you can achieve it!
So I followed a lot of good advice in kennel training Dahlia. She's not really into her crate but she goes in and she doesn't whine about it. But... it's really a pain having to get up early on a Saturday just to make sure the dog doesn't get a bladder infection because I have to let her out to pee. Also if I want to leave her outside, it's getting cold and there's no good place for her to be.
Solution: I remember this doghouse that was built into our storage shed. It was actually inside the storage shed but sectioned off and there was a doggie door out to the penned area.
The only real problem is that there is a 1-2 foot tall concrete foundation. I want to put a man-door from the side of the garage out into the sideyard (right now there is only the large garage door and the door into the laundry room), but I'll have to wait til I can afford to hire someone to come cut the concrete so that the door will be level with the ground. So I can't just put the doggie door into a door; we have to cut a doggie door directly into the garage to go out into the sideyard. So Dahlia will have to step up a little to get in and out... keeps her healthy.
So... with Mom's help, we set to work cursing and hammering all Monday night in my freezing garage. And given that neither of us are contractors, I think we did an awesome job. Minus the fact that one of our four screws in the doggie door corners didn't line up. I'm sure if the neighbors overheard us, they wondered what kind of freak I am: just push harder, keep screwing, NO! I told you, I'm not flush because it's not lined up! Just keep screwing. Well push HARDER, MOM! Oh, home improvement projects are so fun. And we mis-measured out 2"x4"s for the house frame slightly so we had to re-cut and wedge them in... umm it's a handmade job obviously.
We also cut a hole in the top right, and added a little step on the inside, so that Jack can get through the doggie door and up and out to his cat area. There is even a little storage on top of it.
And there's even a place for Jack. Cat condo turned into rooftop loft on top of Dahlia's condo.
